Aimee Gallo – Nutritionist

February 23, 2010

AIMEE GALLO is a licensed sports nutritionist, holistic health counselor and personal trainer. When not out pursuing her own athletic goals, Aimee is busy with her company, Vibrance Nutrition and Fitness, helping clients nationwide meet their fitness and nutrition goals by utilizing a mind, body, and spirit approach.
Aimee’s interest in nutrition began at a young age and through her studies she realized the link between what we put in our bodies and what we can expect to receive from them. Her personal experience with Seasonal Affective Disorder and exercise enlightened her to the importance of movement in healthy living, so she pursued her personal training certification while working toward her Nutrition degree. During this time her relationship with running really blossomed and she completed her first marathon in 2003. Since that inaugural race, she has completed six more marathons and will be running her first Boston Marathon in April of 2010. After beginning her practice, she came to understand the emotional and spiritual component of achieving one’s dreams and began to integrate that into her work with others as well as her own life. She loves showing others how easy it can be to eat healthy, coaching new runners and walkers as well as those desiring the joy that comes from living and moving in a healthy body.
With a focus on holistic health, Aimee’s nutritional and training philosophy inspires others to live the greatest life they can envision for themselves. She helps her clients by showing them how easy and fun it can be to incorporate exercise and whole, unrefined foods every day, despite the hectic pace of the American lifestyle. By utilizing powerful goal setting, whole foods cooking, proper sports nutrition, weight loss and exercise, her clients are able to have more of what they desire in life. Her personal mission is to increase the amount of joy in the world by encouraging others to practice radical self-care and go for their dreams.

National Women’s History Month

February 22, 2010

2010 Theme:

Writing Women Back into History

2010 will be the 30th anniversary of the National Women’s History Project. When we began mobilizing the lobbying effort that resulted in President Carter issuing a Presidential Proclamation declaring the week of March 8, 1980 as the first National Women’s History Week, we had no idea what the future would bring. And then, in 1987, another of our successful lobbying efforts resulted in Congress expanding the week into a month, and March is now National Women’s History Month.

The overarching theme for 2010 and our 30th Anniversary celebration is Writing Women Back into History. It often seems that the history of women is written in invisible ink. Even when recognized in their own times, women are frequently left out of the history books. To honor our 2010 theme, we are highlighting pivotal themes from previous years. Each of these past themes recognizes a different aspect of women’s achievements, from ecology to art, and from sports to politics.

When we began our work in the early eighties, the topic of women’s history was limited to college curricula, and even there it languished. At that time, less than 3% of the content of teacher training textbooks mentioned the contributions of women and when included, women were usually written in as mere footnotes. Women of color and women in fields such as math, science, and art were completely omitted. This limited inclusion of women’s accomplishments deprived students of viable female role models.

Today, when you search the Internet with the words “women’s +history + month,” you’ll find more than 40,500,000 citations. These extraordinary numbers give testimony to the tireless work of thousands of individuals, organizations, and institutions to write women back into history.

Now, more than ever, the work of this movement needs to continue and expand. Each new generation needs to draw information and inspiration from the last.

Remembering: the 19th Amendment

Though the Constitution originally made no mention of a woman’s right to vote, it was implied by society — women simply did not have the right. The 14th Amendment actually made things worse, by codifying the suffrage right to men only, when its Second Clause punished the denial of suffrage to men (though this still did not officially deny women the right). As early as 1848, groups met to discuss how to further women’s rights, and the franchise, it was decided, was the best place to start. But America was not ready, and the suffragists, as they were called, were branded as immoral.

Famous women’s rights leaders Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton tried to make a stand after the Civil War, to have the language of the 14th Amendment include women, though the issue was thought too volatile by most, and passage of the amendment was thought to be in grave jeopardy if such a provision were included. Anthony later used the 15th Amendment as rationale for voting in a New York election, and though she was tried and fined for voting, the ordeal proved an impetus for the eventual guarantee of voting rights for women. By 1918, about half the states had granted women full or partial voting rights; the stature gained by women involved in the temperance movement also helped push the suffragist movement along. The support of women to the war effort convinced many more, even President Woodrow Wilson, who had been staunchly opposed to a federal suffrage amendment. On June 4, 1919, the 19th Amendment was passed by Congress, and it was ratified on August 18, 1920 (441 days).

Maggie LoCasale

February 9, 2010

Maggie LoCasale, originally from Philadelphia, PA has traveled around the world before landing in beautiful San Diego.  Freshman year of college, I found myself riding in the underground located in London, England where my college advisor looked at me and asked, “Can you see yourself living here for an entire semester?” Less than a year later I moved to the Gold Coast of Australia where my journey of self discovery and continuing education beyond the classroom conceived.  Roughly a year and a half later, I picked up and moved to Canterbury, England to complete my student teaching.  From as far back as I can remember I wanted to be a teacher.  I had a burning passion and drive to help people overcome life’s obstacles and succeed.  I picked up and moved to San Diego May of 2008. I had no specific plans when I arrived here, but all I knew was I wanted to surround myself with an association of people who would elevate me to my utmost potential.  Since residing in San Diego, I work in the Del Mar School District while studying and working alongside some of the most influential thought leaders, authors, and entrepreneurs’ in the area I have been given the opportunity to mentor, lead, teach, and assist individuals in living happier, healthier, wealthier lives through continuity programs and life coaching.
